شلینگ در تمام دوران کار فلسفی خود به دنبال یافتن تبیین مناسبی برای مسئلۀ رابطۀ امر مثالی[1]و امر واقعی[2] بود. هدف اصلی شلینگ از دنبال کردن این مسئله، درک و تبیین واقعیت عینی وجود بود. شلینگ هیچ گاه از فروکاسته شدن امر واقعی به امر مثالی خشنود نبود و به همین دلیل به تدریج از جریان ایدئالیسم آلمانی قرن نوزده جدا شد. شلینگ در دورۀ پایانی کار فلسفی خود به تفسیر اسطوره‌های جهان می‌پردازد. فلسفۀ اسطوره در واقع پاسخ نهایی شلینگ برای تبیین رابطۀ امر مثالی و واقعی است. او در پشت صورت ظاهر اسطوره‌های جهان نشانه‌های روح نامحدودی را می‌بیند که به تدریج در حال تحقق است. این روح نامحدود همان فراهستی یا خدا است که به عقیدۀ شلینگ عقل محض تنها می‌توانست مفهوم و ماهیت آن را به عنوان یک امکان انتزاعی اثبات کند.[1].
