Hegel’s philosophy in the Phenomenology of Spirit is an account of the genesis of consciousness as a historical spirit. Along this path, the stage of "self-consciousness" plays a foundational role in the transition from the natural world to the realm of subjectivity. Focusing on the dialectic of the "struggle unto death" and the relations of "Lordship and Bondage," the present text attempts to explain how modern subjectivity is realized. According to Hegel’s analysis, self-consciousness in its isolation is incapable of proving its truth and only reaches maturity through interaction with the other and the struggle for recognition. Meanwhile, the concept of "labor" holds an ontological status as the primary mediator. The article demonstrates how the bondman, through working upon nature and going beyond immediate desire—unlike the lord, who is caught in the passivity of consumption—attains an authentic agency. This process paves the way for a rupture from the feudal and Christian tradition and a transition to the modern industrial world, in which the subject realizes its freedom by becoming intertwined with social relations and objective labor. Ultimately, the present discussion clarifies that Western subjectivity is developed not in the destruction of the object, but in the complex dialectic of the "I" and the "We" and the connection between the agentic activity of the slave and the collective spirit.
