In “Subject and Power” (1982), Foucault emphasized that the central theme of his research was not “Power” but the “Subject.” This focus is further reinforced in his lectures “Subjectivity and Truth” (1980-1981) and “The Hermeneutics of the Subject” (1981-1982), which emphasize the problematic of “Subjectivity and Truth.” These works illustrate that the subject must be problematized in relation to truth. In the preface of “The History of Sexuality” (1984), eight years after the first volume, Foucault provided a comprehensive formulation of his thought process and the rationale for his focus on “genealogy.” The article, grounded in this preface, explains the relationship between the subject, the network of power, and truth, concluding that the approach to examining the subject is through “genealogy and problematization." Sexuality emerges as the key domain for recognizing and constructing oneself as a subject. “Technologies of the self” within the realm of sexuality engender a constant interaction with oneself, perpetuating the production of subjectivity. Therefore, studying the history of these techniques unveils the history of subjectivity. This history converges into the genealogy of the subject by analyzing the intersection of techniques of the self and domination, which defines “governmentality” and “government” — government in the sense of directing behaviors and managing possibilities through various “games of truth.” Consequently, sexuality is deemed a suitable field for genealogical study of the history of subjectivity and techniques of the self, and a rich domain for understanding government and the complex functioning of power practices.
