Frank Sibley’s ideas have affected contemporary philosophers’ views interested iaesthetics. In this regard, most studies have focused on his initial works. He argues in aesthetics that aesthetic notions are not so rule-based that one can well use an aesthetic word merely by distinguishing the non-aesthetic features of an object. Therefore, a person with normal eyes, ears and brain may not be able to distinguish the aesthetic features of the object (because only non-aesthetic features could be distinguished by these abilities). Thus, the existence of “taste” is necessary for distinguishing the aesthetic features and proper use of such words. This paper studies Sibley’s ideas regarding aesthetic qualities and judgments as well as the role of taste as a cognitive ability. Furthermore, the reason why a critic may defend aesthetic judgments and share his findings with addressees has been investigated. So, the paper, based on examples, seeks to precisely state the methods by which the aesthetic feelings of the viewer are nurtured and to pose this question that how through this, one can gain mastery of aesthetic words because the answer to this question gives information on the critic’s discourse.
