In this paper, the influence of One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez on Touba and the Meaning of Night by Shahrnush Parsipur is discussed through a comparative-critical approach. This paper tries to depict the discursive and intertextual connection between the above mentioned novels based on their similar content and themes. In both novels, confrontation and conflict between tradition and modernity is one of the most significant themes. The aim of this essay is to show how there is a confrontation between these works and new world, relying on the voices of the novels, as well as to explain how both authors consider their novels’ ideological and social structures as well as the mental and cultural contexts.
Through a critical comparative study, according to the discourse of tradition and modernity, this paper reveals how Parsipur’s narration suffers from the lack of integrity and coherence, so that her novel doesn’t have the firmness nor the complexity One Hundred Years of Solitude has. Accordingly, Touba and the Meaning of Night is somehow weak in making use of irony, credibility of characters and significant correlation of the events
