They have been derived from human instincts and the common nature of human beings. His theory of art is based on evolutionary theory. His last book, The art instinct: Beauty, pleasure, and human evolution, is a complete defense of this claim. One of the most important and most interesting of his defenses is the existence of common aesthetic tastes and artistic preferences that all humans throughout the world and in different historical periods share it. Based on the available commonalities in the artistic tendencies and preferences of the people, Dutton compiles a list of twelve criteria for the artistic affairs. He thinks that some of the criteria in the list are shaped by natural selection and the others by sexual selection. دنیس داتن[1]، فیلسوف معاصر امریکایی (1941-2010)، دعوی آن دارد که هنر و زیباشناسی گونه­ای سازگاری تکاملی و برآمده از انتخاب طبیعی و انتخاب جنسی­اند و ریشه در غرایز انسانی و سرشت مشترک انسان­ها دارند. او که نظریه‌ی تکامل را مبنای نظریه­ی هنر خود قرار می­دهد در کتاب غریزه­ی هنر: زیبایی، شعف و تکامل در تأیید ادعای خود، به موارد گوناگونی می­پردازد که از مهم­ترین و جالب توجه­ترین آن­ها سلیقه‌های مشترک زیبا‌شناسی و ترجیح‌های هنری مشابه میان انسان­ها در همه­جای جهان و در دوره‌های گوناگون تاریخی است. داتن با توجه به اشتراک‌های موجود در تمایل‌ها و ترجیح‌های هنری انسان­ها، فهرستی دوازده­گانه شامل معیارهای لازم برای هنری بودن امور تدوین می­کند که بخشی از معیارهای موجود در این فهرست با انتخاب طبیعی و بخشی از آن­ها با انتخاب جنسی در ارتباط­اند. به عقیده­ی او بخش قابل توجهی از هنرها محصول انتخاب جنسی هستند و انتخاب طبیعی به تنهایی برای توجیه وجود همیشگی و ماندگار هنرها کافی نیست.[1] Denis L.
