Abstract

In this paper, we discuss meanings of body in the Merleau-ponty’s phenomenology of perception. At the first we examine two interpretive problems: the problem of distinction between body image and body schema and the problem of body as subject-object. Then we will suggest a comprehensive interpretive plan of meanings of body. This plan is explained in negative and positive aspect and in the four levels: epistemological, ontological, spatial and temporal. In the negative aspect we will propose that body is not object in any four levels. In the epistemological level, the body is our perspective to the objects, and in the ontological level the body is intentioned organism corresponding with environment. Also in the spatial level the body is my spatial horizon and in the temporal level is my temporal horizon of my being. Finally we return to two primary interpretive problems and solve those problems.
